Jehlum crosses Flood mark , Sangam at Red Level Mark

Srinagar, June 22 (KNB): In view of devastating weather and continuous rainfall from last 3 days river jehlum reached the flood-level mark of 21-feet at Sangam in south Kashmir at 3pm on Wednesday.

The water level is still on its rise, triggering the flood situation in Srinagar.The water level in wular lake is currently at 1579.91 increased by 0.4 notches in last 2 hours,which lies only 3 feet away from the flood declaration mark of 1578m at 2:30 pm.

While talking to News agency Kashmir News Bureau-KNB KNB, an official of flood and control said that “River jehlum was flowing at 21- feet mark when sangam was declared as flood trodden zone.

The river was flowing at 15.47 feet at Ram munshi bagh,1.5 feet level below the alarm level of 16 feet and 2.43-ft below flood level of 18- ft.

Subsequently, the downstream gauge at Ram Munshibagh is expected to rise as water has crossed the alarming limit in sangam.

At Asham a village in Bandipora it was confirmed from the flood authorities that River jehlum was flowing at 7.76- ft against 14ft mark when flood is alarmed in north Kashmir.

However official of I&FC officials advised people residing along the banks of river jehlum in south and central kashmir to keep a vigal and remain alert.

Its worth to mention that river jehlum was flowing at its normal or lowest ebb in last few years but due to incessant and continuous rainfall from last few days it changed the way, thus bringing a metamorphic change and rise in water level.

Regarding some of the tributaries the official further said, the water level in Vishav Nallah in Khudwani receded from10.7m at noon to 9.92mat 2:pm which still is above alarming mark. Nallah Lidder near Batkot was flowing at 1.21m at noon, Doodhganga Nallah in Barzulla was flowing at 3.8m which is also said to be the alarming mark,Sindh Nallah in Doderhama was flowing at 3.30m against 3.36m at noon which was above Mark of 3.5m when alarm was sounded there and 3.65 when flood is declared.Sukhnag Nallah at Arizal was flowing at 0.52m against 1.3(flood alarm) and Ferozpora Nallah at Drang in Tangmarg was flowing at 1.36(receding) against (1.85m when flood alarm is sounded and 2.0m when flood is declared,while Pohru Nallah at Seelu in Sopore was at 3.52m(rising) against 4.2m(flood alarm)and 4.6m(when flood is declared).

The weatherman has also forecasted that there would be an improvement in weather in next few hours, and its worthy to mention that flood is ultimately declared at several places even though water level in Srinagar and North Kashmir may increase due to the downward movement of water an expert added.(KNB)
