Sopore, May 6(KNB): Unregulated garbage dumping along the banks of the Jhelum River in Sopore has raised serious health and environmental concerns among local residents, who allege that the situation has worsened in recent weeks.
Locals living near the river said the accumulation of waste has led to a persistent foul smell, making it difficult for them to carry out daily activities. The presence of stray dogs and scattered trash has further heightened safety risks, particularly for children and students of a nearby school.
Residents expressed fear that continued dumping could contaminate water sources and lead to the spread of diseases. “The area has become unhygienic and unsafe. Authorities need to act swiftly before the situation escalates,” a local resident said.
The issue has also drawn attention due to its proximity to residential areas and educational institutions, amplifying concerns over public health and sanitation.
While Talking to News agency Kashmir News Bureau officials, however, said that steps are being taken to address the problem.“Residents’ concerns are being addressed, and an alternative dumping site will be made operational soon to resolve the issue,” an official stated.
Meanwhile, locals have urged the authorities to expedite the process and ensure proper waste management practices to prevent further environmental degradation along the Jhelum riverbanks.(KNB)
