Srinagar, Aug 11 (KNB): Security has been intensified across Kashmir ahead of Independence Day, with a multi-layered deployment put in place at key locations, public venues and other sensitive areas, Inspector General of Police Kashmir V.K. Birdi said on Tuesday.

The IGP made the remarks while speaking to reporters during a visit to Balidan Stambh in Srinagar’s Lal Chowk, where he reviewed security and other arrangements being made for the August 15 celebrations.

Birdi said the security plan is not restricted to the main Independence Day venues and covers Srinagar city as well as all districts of the Kashmir Valley.

According to him, different layers of security have been deployed to ensure that the celebrations are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

Preparations for the main Independence Day programme in Srinagar are also being finalised, with full-dress rehearsals and coordination among concerned departments underway ahead of the event.

On questions related to recent terror incidents in south Kashmir, the IGP said investigations are continuing and maintained that it would not be appropriate to disclose details at the present stage.

He said any information that could be made public would be shared once the investigation reaches an appropriate stage.

Birdi also appealed to people to turn out in large numbers for Independence Day programmes, saying the celebrations belong to the public while police and other agencies are responsible for facilitating the arrangements.

He said public participation would contribute towards the successful conduct of the celebrations across the Valley. (KNB)
