Srinagar 2 March (KNB): The accumulation of garbage around the floodgate of Nallah Aamir Khan’s flood channel in the Nowshera area of Srinagar, which is connected with Khushal Sar and Gill Sar lakes, has turned into a garbage site for quite some time.

The residents who lives in the vicinity of the Nallah told the Kashmir News Bureau that the garbage in the Nallah Aamir Khan has worsened the condition of it and is badly stinking the atmosphere. “This is a nuisance for us. There is so much odour emitting from this spot here, and is risky for our health. We used to drink the water from this Nallah once, but it has been turned into a garbage site after putting up the floodgate as all garbage gets gathered there,” said an elderly person from the area.

Another resident claimed that during the times of flood, the channel helped a lot in the receding of the flood. “But for the last five years, the Nallah has been neglected by the authorities. There are chances of the residents of the area getting infected with the diseases if God forbid arises from the garbage accumulated around the flood gate,” said another local resident.

The residents said that the deployment of boats, accompanied by men, to clear the garbage superficially would not help them unless a proper cleaning is being done from the LAWDA department.

Social Activist Farhan said that the authorities are sleeping over the issue, which is taking a heavy toll on the health of the Nallah and the people living nearby. “It is important that concerned authorities look into the matter and clear the garbage from the Nallah before it gets further worsened.”

While talking to Exen LAWDA Feroz Ahmad, he said that in this year’s capex budget, there were no provisions kept for the Nallah Aamir Khan and cited a couple of reasons which hampers them from taking further steps.

However, he said that he is in continuous touch with his department’s senior officer regarding the issue. “I am trying to resolve this issue by the deployment of some men there to get garbage cleared from the Nallah for the time being so that further concrete steps in this regard will be taken after the issuing of tenders and formal orders for it.”

He further said that from Ist April throughout the year, the department will see through the completion of Nallah Amir Khan’s issues. (KNB)
