Srinagar, July 20(KNB): The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department has issued a flood advisory for parts of South Kashmir after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a spell of heavy rainfall over the Jhelum Basin on July 21.
According to the department, the IMD expects widespread rainfall of 50–100 mm across the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam and Shopian during the morning hours of July 21. A second spell of comparatively lighter rainfall is also expected on the morning of July 22.
The department cautioned that the anticipated rainfall could lead to flash floods and a sharp increase in water levels in streams, khuls, nallahs and other watercourses, particularly in the higher reaches and hilly areas of South Kashmir. Water levels in the River Jhelum and its major tributaries are also likely to rise.
In view of the forecast, the I&FC Department has advised people to stay away from rivers, nallahs, khuls and other flood-prone areas, especially in vulnerable hilly regions. Residents have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel through susceptible locations during the expected period of heavy rainfall.
The department further appealed to people living in low-lying areas to remain alert, take appropriate precautionary measures and closely follow official weather and flood-related updates. (KNB)
