‘Excessive’ Document Checkings of Tourist Vehicles by Traffic Police Leave Visitors Uneased, Say Protesting Drivers

 KNB News Desk

Srinagar 03 February (KNB); Scores of local drivers on Thursday staged protest at Press Enclave Srinagar on alleged excessive checking of their documents on the way to tourist destinations by Traffic police, making boarded visitors “apprehensive”.

The aggrieved drivers, who usually ferry non-locals to different tourist places during their stay in the valley, said that the undue checking of their documents by Traffic police along with district police is unjustified, which arouses apprehension among the boarded tourists, they said.

“We have been subjected to injustice while we are heading to tourist spots. At least five traffic naka checking posts have been placed between Narbal to Tangmarg and at every place we have to show our documents. This thing is to be seen everywhere here whether in East, West, North or South,” said a tourist driver, Zakir Hussain.

He further said that on checking their documents by Traffic Police, the tourists travelling in their vehicles get apprehensive, compelling them to think “in which vehicles they are, who the driver is and in which place they are in.”

After drivers recount the things they are facing on a routine basis, the tourist drivers said, “We are being harassed beyond limits.”

The drivers also appealed to SSP Traffic City and other concerned offices to look into the matter forthwith. (KNB)
