CUK Students’ Union Complaints Against University VC, Administration

Srinagar 30 July (KNB): Students’ Union under the course of bachelors in technology for 2nd semester-batch 2020, has complained against the administration and VC of the Central University of Kashmir and said that there is a dictatorship kind of environment created by the authorities.

In a communiqué, the students union said that “unjust measures are taken by the administration of our university under the supervision of the VC of the institute. The unjust is implemented on the students by not providing a student friendly environment in regards to the academics as is endeavoured by all the professional universities of the valley and our country, the UGC guidelines are taken for granted, the government and the bureaucratic orders are disobeyed by taking offline examinations without proper SOPs followed by the government authorities, concerns aren’t shown for any pupil’s mental well-being and all the peaceful protests and grievances are deferred by rude rather unconcerned approach by the administration.”

“First of all without completing the syllabus for our 1st semester that started in 2020 after our selection in the said institute a date sheet was out for the final examination but however was differed due to the 2nd lockdown in the month of April and was kept pending till date. And we were promoted for the academics of our 2nd semester without any examination of our 1st semester,” they stated, adding, “Afterwards we continuously requested and asked the department to conduct the exams online as was mostly done by all the universities and were told that we need to follow the UGC guidelines and kept us waiting till our syllabus for 2nd semester was completed by half. Now the administration is forcing to give the examination of both the semesters in offline mode and released a notice for the same. But however after the UGC guidelines came into existence clearly stating that, “For intermediate semester/year students, assessment shall be based on internal evaluation and previous semester as suggested in 2020 guidelines.”

“But it’s now a statement by the university that we aren’t bound to follow the UGC and are pressurising the students to give both the examinations of the two semesters without the completion of the syllabus for the both. There is a disobey for the respected constitution of our country by not providing us the equality,” they stated, adding “For instance if online examination was a mode during this pandemic we were disowned from this right but the same right was given to other universities. Hence a relief for others and a burden on us. Thus equality was snatched from us.”

They mentioned, “By the conduction of examinations in offline mode of Law department (CIA) etc. and of ours to follow during this time when there is a threat of 3rd wave of the pandemic there is a drastic violation of the government orders. By not following the proper SOPs there is a threat to the life of students and apparently the society.”

Further stated that “From 24th of July we declared a peaceful protest by boycotting all the academic activities and refrain from filling the examination form of the said exam. But the attitude of the university authority was uncondemning and was stated by them we are at the loss at the end.”

The Students’ Union further stated that there is a dictatorship kind of environment created by the authorities. “Just to come in the good books of all and to add a star to their designations they are sacrificing the mental health and academic ability/performance of the students. Just to be a highlighted institute they are diverting from the mainstream and subsequently equality is being snatched from the students,” they added.

“We want the UGC guidelines to be followed and us to be promoted for our 1st and 2nd semester final examinations, and an amendment in the working strategy of the university so that equality is implemented with respect to other institutes off the country,” they stated and further emphasised that “till then we are on a peaceful protest by boycotting all the academic activities/responses and if necessary in future it will follow up with a student hunger strike. In case of life threat or mental illness to any student due to the issue the administration and the VC to the university shall be the sole responsible.”

Apart from affirmation by 7 union representatives, union president and the union HR, as per the statement all the other students of the Union support the above mentioned facts. (KNB)
