10th Consecutive Friday: No Prayers at Jama Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Under House Detention

Srinagar, 15 December (KNB):The authorities in Srinagar have once again barred Friday prayers at the central Jama Masjid for the 10th consecutive week a row and also put Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq under house detention without any explanation provided by the authorities, according to a statement from Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid.

The Anjuman said that no reason is provided by the authorities for these restrictions and curbs.

Expressing his strong condemnation, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq highlighted the impact of these repeated closures, emphasizing that such measures undermine any claims of normalcy in the region. He questioned the targeted approach toward the central Jama Masjid suggesting that it might be a deliberate effort to distress the Muslim population and reinforce a particular narrative about “Naya Kashmir.”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq urged the ruling authorities to respect the religious sentiments of the Muslim community and allow them to offer prayers without hindrance. He emphasized that the silence of the people should not be mistaken for weakness and he called for an end to what he termed as “brazen attacks” on their religious rights.-KNB
