Srinagar 8 September (KNB): World Literacy Day is celebrated on 8th of September each year and great emphasis is placed on the importance of literacy of individuals, communities and societies around the globe.

The ability to read and write as well as education is crucial for human growth and bring about a better way of living; in the past 2 years, Covid-19 Pandemic has hampered both a lot. Despite online learning initiated across the globe to overcome the situation, many couldn’t avail from these initiatives because of lack of connectivity and resources.

The United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) said that the day will be celebrated under the theme, “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide’.

On the day, UNESCO tweeted, “Digital skills have become a key factor to access life-saving information. But over half of the world’s population lack basic skills for computer-based activities. We must step up efforts to expand literacy and digital skills for all!”

In a statement, the organisation also said that ILD 2021 will explore how literacy can contribute to building a solid foundation for a human-centred recovery, with a special focus on the interplay of literacy and digital skills required by non-literate youth and adults. It will also explore what makes technology-enabled literacy learning inclusive and meaningful to leave no one behind. By doing so, ILD2021 will be an opportunity to reimagine future literacy teaching and learning, within and beyond the context of the pandemic.

Moreover, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha in a tweet also greeted people on the International Literacy Day 2021.

LG Sinha said, “World Literacy Day reminds us that there are still many people who lack proper education in today’s world, which is driven by knowledge and scientific innovations. Education is the only means that frees us from the darkness of ignorance and barriers of backwardness.”

“The J&K government has taken multiple breakthrough initiatives to take the boon of education to the people, including those residing in far-flung areas and remote areas,” he added.

Manoj Sinha further called upon all the educated people of J&K to spread awareness and put their efforts in making every person of the UT educated and empowered with knowledge of the modern world.

Pertinent to mention that 8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies. (KNB)
