Srinagar 27 May (KNB): Joint Commissioner Planning, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Ghulam Hassan Mir on Thursday said that he is going to file a defamation lawsuit worth 5 crore against the Mayor of City Junaid Azim Mattu.

In response to the Mayor Mattu’s accusations of corruption and harassment against women—which he was vocal about during the ongoing indefinite hunger strike in Srinagar, along with 61 corporators seeking immediate removal of the JCP—Mir said that the Mayor has done character assassination.

“All that he said today (during the protest) was my character assassination, which he is used to doing against his corporators but he cannot do that to a government officer,” JCP Mir told news agency Kashmir News Bureau.

“Against all that he said; I’m going to file a complaint for defamation against him, which will be worth 5 Crore,” Mir emphasized.

When asked about the comments on the protest and their demands to remove him (Mir) from the post, JCP Mir responded that he is not authorized to comment on that, “It is the job of Government to appoint or remove officers.”

He further said that it a usual thing for Mayor of City Junaid Mattu to indulge in character assassination, which is not at all acceptable.

Regarding the allegations of harassing women, JCP said, “He (Mayor) does not know what and who he is talking about, I have credibility!”

“It is not like he can go on speaking things just because he is a Mayor and opt for character assassination of a person unnecessarily just to meet his selfish and vested interests,” JCP SMC said, adding that politics is acceptable, approaching media is fine but not to the extent where it becomes absolutely unacceptable.

Pertinent to mention that Mayor of Srinagar city, Junaid Azim Mattu, Deputy Mayor Parvaiz Ahmad Qadri along with 61 corporators of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) staged an indefinite hunger strike against the Joint Commissioner Planning, Ghulam Hassan Mir and sought his immediate removal.
