Srinagar 22 December (KNB): Locals of Shirpora Geugran Kandi area of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district have been facing an acute water shortage for several days amid bone-chilling cold and are relying on water tankers.
Locals of the area said that the issue of water shortage in the area has extended for several days and have failed to garner the attention of the concerned officials.
They said that females of the area, without having any option, have to collect water from a tanker amid intense cold when they prefer to remain inside their homes.
“The issue of water shortage has been existing for more than a week now. The residents of the area are suffering due to it, and that too when the intense cold is prevailing across the valley,” said Jan Mohammad, a local.
“Water is now being collected from a tanker which is proving not less than a trial for the womenfolk of the area as they have to get out of their homes amid sub-zero degree temperature to fetch the drinking water,” said another local, Ghulam Mohiuddin Lone.
The locals further said that collecting water from the water tanker is often becoming a breeding ground of fights and squabbles among the men and women when they either try to get more water or jump the line.
“We are requesting the concerned authorities to please help address the issue and end the discrimination in providing water as the other adjacent areas have tap water 24/7,” the locals said.
On talking to concerned AEE PHE, he said that the problem of water shortage to the area had occurred following the intensifying of the cold and the resultant freezing of pipes at the higher reaches.
“Water tankers have been already provided to the affected area and the restoring of water would depend upon the relief in cold conditions,” the official said. (KNB)
