ULB Polls: Who is Next Mayor of Srinagar?

Srinagar, October 25 (KNB): In the recent Urban Local Body (ULB) Election Bharatiya Janta Party emerged as a winning party by bagging 100 wards in Jammu division , while as the Congress and the Independents were ahead of the BJP in the valley by bagging 157 and 178 wards in the Kashmir division.

Despite  low voting percentage in the valley and the boycott by the two mainstream parties NC , PDP. Following the boycott less people participated in voting in the valley and the wining candidates got the seats by few votes only. But the decision for choosing the mayor is yet to be taken.

If sources to be believed, closed door meetings are being held in which senior leaders, MLC ‘S, Corporates and stake holders are participating and buying their chance of selecting a Mayor of their choice. Basically whole game of horsetrading is underplay.

They said, money floating and blackmailing processes are going on. The proxy campaigning backed by big stake holders are not being helpful to come to a conclusion. It is still a suspense around, about which party is supporting whom and who will be the Mayor.

However, Junaid Azim Mattu who resigned from NC to contest in the local polls and an Independent from Srinagar district and emerged as a prominent winner, is in the race for becoming the Mayor.

Mohammad Sheikh Imran ,president of Jammu and Kashmir People’s Alliance (JKPA), who won from Nishat ward no. 2 is also in the race of Mayor candidate.

On the other hand, the leadership of Janta Dal (united) JDU led by its state president G M Shaheen while addressing a press conference on Tuesday announced Dr. Nawab Nasir Aman as Mayor candidate for Srinagar. He further said that the post of Deputy Mayor will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, Ravindar Raina, the state president for BJP said that they can tie up with People’s conference for Mayorship of Srinagar.

However , no other party has come up clearly with their choices who they are supporting. Hence, the decision seem to be quite unpredictable that who will be the Mayor of Srinagar. (KNB)
