03 Nov(KNB): The Indian Navy has successfully rescued a hijacked fishing vessel, Azini, from armed pirates off the coast of Somalia following a coordinated operation lasting over 48 hours. All 20 crew members were safely rescued, with no casualties or injuries reported.
According to the Indian Navy, the fishing vessel was hijacked by an armed pirate group earlier last month off the northeastern coast of Somalia. There were concerns that the vessel could be used as a mother ship to launch further attacks on merchant ships operating in the region.
Following the incident, the Navy deployed a mission-ready warship along with a maritime reconnaissance aircraft to locate and monitor the hijacked vessel. After continuous surveillance and tracking, the Navy used calibrated measures to restrict the vessel’s movement and prevent the pirates from escaping.
Marine Commandos were also deployed, with additional support provided through a precision airdrop by an Indian Air Force C-17 aircraft.
In a coordinated tactical operation, the Navy successfully secured the vessel, neutralised the pirate threat and ensured the safe release of all 20 crew members.
The successful operation highlights the Indian Navy’s operational preparedness and coordination with other defence forces in tackling maritime security threats. It also reinforces India’s commitment to safeguarding seafarers and protecting important maritime trade routes in the Indian Ocean Region.(KNB)
