Srinagar, Mar 26 (KNB): The joining of militant ranks by the 26-year-old Junaid Ashraf Khan, the son of newly appointed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) chief Ashraf Sehrai has send shock waves within the Hurriyat camps.
Sources revealed to Kashmir News Bureau that soon after the news of Junaid’s joining of militancy came into light the ‘upset’ newly appointed chairman of TeH, Ashraf Sehrai and the father of former called on Syed Ali Geelani to seek suggestions to combat the mental distress.
“The Geelani under his capacity called emergency meeting of Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) in which besides Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik a number of ‘pro-freedom’ leaders participated which lasted more than three hours,” sources added.
The meeting unanimously decided to be reserved regarding the ‘armed struggle’ in Kashmir.
Sources said Sehrai also made clear that no appeal to his son (as requested by state Police Chief) will be made for Junaid’s return.
A Hurriyat leader pleading anonymity talking to KNB said “there is no question to issue a statement or to make appeal Kashmiri youth to refrain from militancy at this point as it will be taken as selfishness on part of pro-freedom camp.”
Meanwhile, Junaid’s joining of militancy triggered a debate on Social Media where most of the netizens expressed anguish saying a person whose father is addressing Kashmir issue on ‘political grounds’ from last 60 years was disappointing that his son opt the ‘armed struggle.’
Pertinently, soon after the eruption of ‘armed struggle’ in early 90s, Hurriyat Conference was formed aimed to address the Kashmir issue on political grounds, however, even after 25 years of its existence, the armed struggle in Kashmir remained parallel in Kashmir to focus attention of world towards Kashmir.
The Hurriyat blames Government of India for the extremism in Kashmir saying the lack of political space and pushing youth to the wall is main cause of youth joining militancy. As such till date Hurriyat never made any statement asking youth to refrain from militancy. (KNB)
