Frequent traffic mess disrupting normal life in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 16 (KNB): – Failure of
authorities to put in place measures for traffic regulation in evenings causes traffic jams in the length and breadth of Kashmir.  Commuters have been facing a tough time for the last several days as sometimes traffic cops disappear from roads during evening hours.
The mismanagement of the traffic and callous attitude of drivers and commuters has left the town in a continued mess, often causing inconvenience to the people. The sick and infirm become the worst sufferers to commuters.
Wrong parking in evening hours is worsening the situation. “Scores of private cars are parked on roadsides in main roads. Footpaths are occupied by street vendors. There is no space for pedestrians to even walk. They are forced to walk on road which worsens the traffic jam,” a commuter said.
The same scenes are witnessed at other vital spots in the Srinagar including Hawal, Gojwara Chowk, Lal Ded Road, and Dalgatel main point. Couple of policemen can be seen on the beginning of the day, manning roads and chowks but as the day advances they vanish in thin air.
On my way to office, barely three kilometers from my home, I am usually stuck for more than an half hour every day. The sumo and Tavera drivers park their vehicles just at Dalgate which leads to the traffic jam,” Mohd Amin a Govt employee said. “There is nobody to discipline these drivers. The administration considers the natives of this place as herds of sheep. Nobody bothers to check the violations by the public transporter operators, Amin added. (KNB)
