Srinagar 4 March (KNB): In an annual report by Freedom House, an NGO funded by the US government, the Indian has lowered to a status of “partly free”, which in 2020 report was declared “free” by the same organisation.
The report cites many reasons that no longer keep India in a free status and clearly depicts that Narendra Modi’s coming to power in 2014 did away with rights and civil liberties in the country. There is also a highlight in a report about the Narendra Modi-led Indian government and its allies in states continuing to crackdown on dissent.
The report stressed on discriminatory policies, intimidation of Journalists and academicians, violence against Muslims and other minorities. It further points out the internet shutdowns, which are often resorted to by the Indian government during uneven situations.
India had scored 71 in last year, which now in the latest reports stands at 67 out of 100. Countries like Finland, Norway, and Sweden have scored 100 and stand as the world’s most free countries. (KNB)
