SOPORE, August 19(KNB): – A new era for local sports began in Sopore on Tuesday with the launch of the Wular Smash Volleyball Tournament, a landmark event being held on the region’s first-ever synthetic turf. The tournament, part of the “My Youth, My Pride” initiative, brings together 16 teams from across North Kashmir for a 12-day competition at the Sheikh-ul-Aalam ground in Tarzoo.
The event aims to provide a professional platform for aspiring athletes while promoting a healthy, drug-free lifestyle among the youth. The inaugural match between Jahama Volleyball Cup and Rajwara Volleyball Cup was flagged off by the chief guest, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Sopore, S.A. Raina.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, ADC Raina lauded the organizers for their vision. “It is heartening to see such a competitive sporting event in Sopore,” he stated. “The tournament will go a long way in nurturing local talent. The newly introduced turf provides an excellent and supportive playing surface, and the management deserves appreciation for bringing this to Sopore.”
The tournament is a collaborative effort with the J&K Sports Council, which has been instrumental in supporting the initiative. Chief Organiser Ishfaq Ahmed Dar described the event as more than just a competition.
“Wular Smash is a platform to unite our youth through sport and provide them with an alternative to negative distractions,” Dar explained. “Our vision is to promote a healthy lifestyle, showcase the energy of our youth, and ensure that Sopore becomes a hub of sporting excellence.”
The introduction of the synthetic turf is seen by many as a significant upgrade for sports infrastructure in the area, with organizers hopeful that it will pave the way for more professional-level events. The tournament has already generated considerable local excitement, drawing large crowds on its opening day to witness the high-energy clashes.(KNB)
