Srinagar 07 September (KNB): A mosque was damaged in a fire incident on Tuesday after a fire engulfed the whole structure in the late morning hours in Srinagar’s Khanyar area.

According to a Fire and Emergency official, the mosque was gutted in a fire and the cause of it was being ascertained. He said that the fire, which seemed to be accidental, had started from the mosque and later on engulfed the three other houses adjacent to it.

During the fire, upper portions of the three houses also got damaged besides of the mosque, a main origin of the fire, as per the official.

“As the fire started, the nearby fire tenders had reached the spot and later on reinforcement was sent from the fire control room. 10 to 12 fire tenders were sent here and property was saved despite the area being congested and predominated with wooden structures,” the official said.

However, after the fire, the locals alleged that the fire pump installed in the area did not work. Regarding the allegation, the official said that at some places water pressure remains low or gets an insufficient supply of water from PHE by which very meagre water comes from the pumps, which otherwise are functioning properly.

The official also said that there is a dearth of manpower in the department which is going to be solved in this year with recruitment of new ones very soon.

However, in the incident, a few firefighters also received minor injuries, as per the official. (KNB)
