Family of SPO, who decamped with AK-47 rifle, urges him to return

Shopian 28 August (KNB): In an emotional appeal, the family of Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, a Special Police Officer (SPO) cop of JK police who deserted the force and decamped with an AK-47 rifle from a police station in Shopian, has urged him to come back.

According to reports reaching Kashmir News Bureau, Showkat’s father, Abdul Majeed Sheikh, with folded hands and other family members with tears in their eyes have asked him to return.

Showkat’s family believe that he must have joined a militant outfit, but so far no photo of his, confirming his joining of militant organisation, has been circulated on social media, a go-to way for new recruits to confirm their joining.  Echoing the family’s apprehensions, an earlier report, citing sources, published in The Tribune, said that the SPO ‘had in all likelihood joined militant ranks’. The report, quoting Shopian SSP Sandeep Chaudhry, however, also said that the facts were being ascertained whether or not Showkat has joined any militant outfit.

A resident of Hermain Shopian, Showkat had, on 25 August, decamped with an AK-47 rifle of his colleague and, reportedly, with some magazines from a police station in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. (KNB)
