New Delhi, June 30 (KNB): Mahesh Dixit, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, assumed charge as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on Tuesday, taking over the leadership of the country’s premier internal intelligence agency.
Mr. Dixit succeeds Tapan Kumar Deka, who completed his tenure after serving as the IB chief for four years. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet had approved Mr. Dixit’s appointment for a period of two years.
A medical doctor by training before joining the Indian Police Service, Mr. Dixit has spent nearly three decades in the field of intelligence and national security. Prior to his appointment as Director, he was serving as the Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau, the second-highest position in the organisation.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Dixit has held several key intelligence assignments across the country. He headed the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar, where he was associated with intelligence coordination and security operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He also played an important role in security planning during the post-Article 370 period and was involved in coordinating intelligence efforts for the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar in 2023.
Mr. Dixit has also served in sensitive assignments in Nagaland, Bihar and other parts of the country. He is regarded as an experienced intelligence officer with expertise in counter-terrorism, anti-Naxal operations, internal security and strategic intelligence.
His appointment comes at a time when the Intelligence Bureau continues to address evolving security challenges, including terrorism, cyber threats, cross-border infiltration and emerging internal security concerns. (KNB)
