Delhi 09 June(KNB): The Indian government has approved an additional Rs 25 crore in compensation for residents of Jammu and Kashmir whose homes were damaged due to shelling from Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. This decision follows an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who declared that each fully damaged house would receive an extra Rs 2 lakh, while partially damaged houses would get Rs 1 lakh.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah played a key role in facilitating this additional funding, which will benefit 2,060 houses. Similar compensation will also be extended to affected residents in Punjab’s border areas.
The shelling incidents led to significant damage to residential areas, schools, places of worship, and commercial properties in the border districts. In response, the administration took several proactive measures, including the evacuation of 3.25 lakh people. About 15,000 of those evacuated were housed in 397 shelters equipped with essential facilities.
To ensure healthcare, 394 ambulances were deployed across the border districts, with 62 of them stationed in Poonch alone. Additionally, 2,818 civil defense volunteers were deployed to assist with health services, emergency response, livestock care, and essential supplies.
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited Poonch on May 29-30, where he handed over appointment letters to the families of those who lost their lives in the cross-border firing, providing them with compassionate appointments. This recent approval of additional compensation aims to further support those affected by the shelling.(KNB)
