Srinagar, April 30(KNB): Fresh concerns have emerged over a possible surge in lung cancer cases in Srinagar, with the Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) indicating that preliminary data places the city among the highest in the country for lung cancer incidence.

Speaking on the basis of ongoing registry analysis, SKIMS Director Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie said that internal data trends suggest Srinagar is recording an unusually high number of lung cancer cases. He added that comprehensive and officially verified figures will be released soon.

While final numbers are awaited, existing cancer registry data from SKIMS already underscores the seriousness of the situation. Lung cancer continues to be the most common malignancy among men in the region, reflecting a sustained and significant disease burden.

Health experts at the institute attribute the emerging trend primarily to high tobacco consumption and environmental factors. Earlier observations by SKIMS have identified smoking as a major risk factor driving lung cancer prevalence in Jammu and Kashmir, alongside rising respiratory illnesses linked to pollution.

The institute’s cancer registry—operational over recent years—has documented tens of thousands of cancer cases across Kashmir, indicating a steady rise in incidence alongside improvements in detection and reporting systems.

Officials said the forthcoming official dataset will provide clearer insights into district-wise and city-specific trends, including whether Srinagar’s burden significantly exceeds the national average. The data is expected to inform future public health strategies, including targeted anti-smoking campaigns, early screening initiatives, and pollution control measures.

Medical experts have warned that without urgent intervention, the combination of high smoking prevalence and deteriorating air quality could further accelerate lung cancer cases in the Valley.(KNB)
