Srinagar 24 June (KNB): Scores of Transporters, especially Sumo drivers on Thursday here staged protest at Press Enclave alleging of money asked from them by police in the name of Red Cross Society despite of adhering to Covid SOPs.
The drivers said that they are being stopped often and demanded money by handing over the receipts of Indian Red Cross Society to them from police without any reason.
“We are only boarding five passengers and are properly following the given SOPs, but despite that money is charged from us, which the police say will go to the Red Cross Society,” said one of the drivers.
The driver further said that the fare charge is 250 rupees on his routine plying route with five passengers on board, but 500 rupees is being charged from him. “If we are not adhering to the SOPs and others we should be challaned for the same and not asked for money from us in the name of Indian Red Cross Society,” the driver said.
Replying to a question of what is the reason cited by the police while taking money from you, the driver said “police tell us that you have to pay anyhow and have been asked to issue it for at least 50 vehicles.”
However, the protesting drivers also appealed to the concerned authorities to look into the matter for its redressal. (KNB)
