Shopian,November 20(KNB): Four militants and an Indian army soldier were killed in an encounter in Nadigam of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday morning just minutes before the Panchayat polls.
As per the reports,the army had intelligence inputs of militants hiding in the area and had launched a pre-dawn search operation.A joint team of the Army’s paratroopers, the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force were carrying out searches at Nadigam, when the militants opened fire at them.
The forces retaliated, leading to a gunfight in which three soldiers were wounded, said a source.
The injured soldiers were identified as Sepoy Shailender Singh of 34 RR, Lance Naik Somveer of 23 PARA and Havaldar Bhupinder Singh of 23 PARA.
According to the sources, one of the critically wounded soldiers was shifted to 92 Base hospital in Srinagar where he succumbed.
An official said that four militants were killed in the gunfight. Their bodies have been recovered, they were establishing their identities,he added.
Meanwhile, the Internet service was suspended in the district soon after the gunfight broke out.
Eye witness said,that many civilians were injured including a woman and three girls near the site of a gunfight in Nadigam village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district.
One of the injured girls, Simran has suffered bullet injury in her abdomen while Meenu and Rafia have got injuries infoot and leg respectively.(KNB)
