Srinagar, May 05 (KNB): With disappearances being the burning issue in Kashmir since decades, the pain of never knowing the whereabouts of near and dear ones is the worst. A family in Downtown Srinagar bears testimony to this worst form of suppression unleashed.
The families of brothers in their thirties Muhammad Shafi Rah and Mushtaq Ahmad Rah of Maharj Ganj Srinagar , who were doing leather business in South Asian country Nepal bear testimony to this painful saga. Pertinently, the two brothers shifted to Kathmandu, Nepal in 1995 from Srinagar to earn a living. But fate wrecked miseries on them. On September 5, 2000 the two brothers were arrested by a joint team of police from Nepal and New Delhi never to be seen again. According to their families, they were enforced to disappearance in custody.
Abdul Ahad Rah, the ailing 78 -year-old father of Shafi and Mushtaq in sad tone narrates his doleful story – “These 18 years have been total nightmare for our family. I have run from pillar to post with no success in finding my disappeared sons, I was told they were lodged in Jodhpur jail but when I went there I was not allowed to meet them and then told they were not there . We have never been concrete clue by the authorities what has happened to them despite knocking every door. From Judiciary to human rights organizations and to meeting politicians nothing has bore fruits for us as we have been just witness to the fake assurances. We still have a hope that one day they will return and I appeal to human hearts help us in our fight of justice.”
As a matter of fact, Kathmandu Post, which is the largest selling newspaper in Nepal, published the news about the arrest of Kashmiris in Nepal in 2000. The news item mentioned the names of Mushtaq and Shafi among the 27 arrested.
The mother of these disappeared brothers 75 year old grief stuck Khadijah Rah states – “These 18 years have inflicted eighteen million stabs on our heart and made both of us afflicted with great pain and scores of diseases. We talk about them till late midnight and break into tears everyday. I am living for a day when they will return and I will give them motherly love as I don’t know what has happened to them. It has been catastrophic time for us as not many have cooperated with us and our family has just got lip service. I appeal to Government of India to disclose location of my sons and come clear on the issue.”
With moist eyes and broken heart the downtrodden parents have an appeal for the ruling regime, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and Human Rights Activists to take some serious measures to trace out their sons.
