World Health Day: Doctors Role Lauded in Kashmir

Kashmir News Bureau

The World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on 7 April, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization, as well as other related organisations. In 1948, the WHO held the First World Health Assembly.

In the pain hit valley of Kashmir due to prevailing conflict and turmoil Doctors have played a tremendous role in saving lives and with rampant use of pellet gun in past few years resulting in grievous eye injuries the work pressure on the doctors has grown manifolds.

In addition to these grim realities, the availability or the doctor- patient ratio is quite abnormally high in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

Sources said that the prevailing scenario vis-à-vis availability of doctors can be gauged from the figures which reveal that the doctor-patient ratio in Jammu Kashmir is 1:1880 against the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) of 1:1000.

On the world health day, doctors have some vital things to say to masses of Kashmir. Dr .Shariq Malik, while talking to the Kashmir News Bureau states –  “The people in Kashmir visit multiple practitioners and often even visit quacks for treatment which puts their health under grave risk. Rampant use of medicine especially antibiotics without proper advice is also another cause of concern. I also believe that if people show better discipline and patience in hospitals we can ensure better treatment. Also huge number of attendants accompanying a patient complicates the matter. Eat healthy and be cautious about right treatment is my advice to people of Kashmir on eve of global health day.”

Bilal Bashir Sheikh, a youth while talking to the Kashmir News Bureau states – “ On this world health day let us express our gratitude to the Doctors community who are always working with great zeal and zest to treat patients and save precious human lives especially in the conflict ridden valley of Kashmir. We also hope a better efficiency from Doctors and also stress on people to cooperate with them. “
