New Delhi, Feb 12 (KNB): The Supreme Court on Monday put a stay on the FIR registered against Army Major Aditya Kumar in connection with last month’s Shopian firing case in which three civilians were killed. The apex court also directed that no coercive action be taken against Major Aditya in connection with the incident.
The order was passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. While staying the FIR, the Supreme Court also issued notices to the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government, seeking reply within two weeks.
The Supreme Court order came on a plea by Major Aditya’s father, Lt Col Karamveer Singh, seeking to quash the FIR lodged by the Jammu and Kashmir Police against his son and other Army personnel over the firing incident in Shopian.
The Mehbooba Mufti-led state government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and sought a report within 20 days. The FIR was registered against personnel of 10 Garhwal Rifles, including Major Aditya Kumar, under sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Ranbir Penal Code. (KNB)
