Students suffer after SKIMS medical College designated as Covid-19 Hospital

Srinagar, June 25(KNB): Students of SKIMS Medical College Bemina Srinagar accused administration for stowing their career at stake after the hospital cum medical college being designated as Covid-19 hospital while only Covid patients are being admitted there, affecting the academic, clinical posting and training session of more than 500 students who are not getting patients of their domain.

SKIMS Medical College & Hospital Bemina was designated as Covid-19 hospital in the month of march after the outbreak of Covid-19, however, almost 500 interness both UG as well as postgraduate doctors are the most affected as they have been deprived from attending the patients of their domain and as such have been left with no other choice than to attend the covid patients only.

Students accused the college administration for playing with their careers with around 50 odd internees having supposedly missed their crucial training from the last 4 months owing to this.

“The trainees here are suffering a lot since the abrogation of Article 370 till now, be it our academic session, clinical postings and now examination are being delayed affecting our degree course time as our examinations which were to be conducted last year are still pending thus delaying our degree course,” an internee at SKIMS wishing to be anonymous, told news agency Kashmir News Bureau.

“Moreover, since the hospital which is a medical college too was designated as a Covid-19 hospital, other patients have been removed from the hospital and no follow up is taking place regarding our training session as we are not able to treat the patients of our domain.” He further said,

Another trainee said, “The Administration has put the carrier of almost 500 students on stake as the training session is being constantly delayed. Pre Final batch or Maternity posting where students got an exposure of dealing with maternity cases got worstly affected due to which students remain far away from such an important experience.”

It is pertinent to mention here that the Faculty of the SKIMS Bemina had earlier also written a letter to the Director of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), calling for admission of only critically ill Covid patients and management of less critical patients in the periphery.

The letter read as, “Our Principal has refused to listen to us on repeated occasions and harassed many faculty members and even used unparliamentary language several times. Any algorithm mentions team leadership. Unfortunately, this critical aspect is lacking sorely at this hour of crisis. Vindictiveness under such circumstances, which you are witness to, is reprehensible.”

When Kashmir News Bureau contacted Dr Riyaz untoo, Principal SKIMS Bemina he said, “The decision of designating SKIMS a Covid-19 hospital was of government, it has nothing to do with the administration. We are approaching the government to start Covid and non Covid areas so that the training session of students won’t suffer.”

“The initiative has been taken up, already a meeting has been done in this regard and we are planning to write to the government keeping in view the carrier of almost 600 interness. Like other medical college here too some area will be designated for Covid patients and the rest for non- Covid patients soon,” he further added.(KNB)
