Srinagar 06 August (KNB): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the Khel Ratna Award from now would be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
Modi on Friday in his tweet said that “I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.”
He further said that by respecting their (citizens) sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
PM said that Major Dhyan Chand was among India’s foremost sportspersons who brought honour and pride for India. “It is fitting that our nation’s highest sporting honour will be named after him,” said Modi.
It is pertinent to mention that Dhyan Chand was Indian hockey player widely regarded as one of the greatest in the history of the sport. He was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats. (KNB)
