35 lakh youth from J&K involved in sports activities: Official Data
Srinagar 06 Feb(KNB): Under the leadership of Secretary Nuzhat Gul, the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has witnessed a transformative period marked by remarkable achievements in various sporting endeavors.
According to official data of J&K Sports Council, over 97 Lakh Youth engagement was witnessed during the tenure of Secretary Nuzhat Gul’s tenure from different UT’s and states of India.
“From hosting prestigious national championships to fostering youth engagement and upgrading sports infrastructure, Secretary Gul’s tenure has left an indelible mark on the sports landscape of the region,” said one of the athlete.
Official data revealed that J&K hosted numerous national championships across various sports disciplines. Notable events included the Senior National Soft Tennis Championship, Junior and Sub Junior National Pencak Silat Championships, and the National Ice Stock Sports Championship, showcasing the region’s prowess on the national stage.
Highest Ever Medal Tally:
J&K athletes achieved unprecedented success, securing a record-breaking 1259 medals in national and international competitions during the period. Notably, the region’s performance at the National Games held in Goa, where J&K secured 46 medals, highlighted the athletes’ remarkable achievements under Secretary Gul’s leadership.
Khelo India Winter Games: Secretary Gul’s efforts were instrumental in organizing and successfully hosting the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, establishing J&K as the capital of winter sports in India. The event witnessed widespread participation and accolades, further promoting winter sports in the region.
Youth Engagement: Under Secretary Gul’s guidance, youth engagement in sports saw an exponential rise, reaching a historic milestone of 97 lakh participants. This surge in participation not only nurtures talent but also contributes to the holistic development of the youth, serving as a cornerstone in nation-building efforts.
Establishment of Khelo India Centres: J&K witnessed the establishment of a record number of Khelo India Centres, totaling 91 across the UT. These centers provide free training to thousands of aspiring athletes, particularly from rural and tribal areas, fostering a robust sporting ecosystem in the region.
Infrastructure Development: Secretary Gul spearheaded the development of state-of-the-art sports infrastructure across all 20 districts of J&K, including 17 indoor stadiums and 592 sports fields. Flood-lit stadiums in every district have facilitated evening sports activities, further enhancing community engagement in sports.
Online Coaching and Skill Training Programs: Secretary Gul’s initiatives introduced online coaching and skill training programs, benefiting over 26,000 youth in various sports disciplines. These programs promote accessibility and inclusivity, enabling aspiring athletes to hone their skills from the comfort of their homes.
Revival of International/National Cricket: Secretary Gul’s efforts led to the revival of international and national cricket in J&K through initiatives like the Legends League Cricket, attracting international cricketers and rejuvenating the cricketing spirit in the region.
Women Empowerment in Sports: Secretary Gul’s focus on women’s participation in sports has led to a significant increase in female representation across various sports disciplines, empowering women athletes and coaches to excel at national and international levels.
Streamlining Sports Associations: Under Secretary Gul’s leadership, UT Sports Associations have undergone structural reforms to ensure transparency and accountability in team selection processes, fostering a conducive environment for the development of sports in J&K.
