Udhampur, June 5(KNB): The Northern Command marked World Environment Day with a week-long initiative at the Udhampur Military Station. Under the theme “We have not inherited the Earth from our ancestors but have borrowed from our children,” the events aligned with the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) focus on “Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
The commemorative activities commenced with a solemn “Pledge Ceremony” held across all military stations and Residential Welfare Organizations (RWA). Participants reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the environment. A lecture and demonstration at the Dhruva Eco-Friendly Waste Management System emphasized the concept of a “Zero Landfill Army.” Attendees gained insights into composting techniques and waste segregation practices for both families and military units. The overarching goal was to promote the 3R principles: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, thereby maximizing the utilization of unavoidable waste.
In addition to these efforts, comprehensive Shramdaan (voluntary labor) and Swachhta Abhiyan (cleanliness drive) initiatives were organized at military stations. Recognizing the importance of involving the next generation, awareness campaigns targeted students from APS Udhampur and NCC cadets. As part of the greening drive, over 1000 saplings were planted across various units and RWAs in Udhampur.
The culminating event took place at the Northern Command Veterans’ Dispensary (NCVD) in Udhampur. This tree plantation drive exemplified Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar’s vision to foster a culture of environmental sustainability within the armed forces. By actively engaging in conservation efforts, the Northern Command continues to play a vital role in preserving our planet for future generations.(KNB)
