Srinagar 9 June (KNB): More than 20 households in Iqbal Abad-lane 4, Sector 7A, Friends Land in Bemina area of Srinagar, suffer immensely due to unavailability of water supply for over past 7 days.
Residents of the area reached out news agency Kashmir News Bureau and said that concerned officials have not been able to rectify the water supply issue, which has left more than 20 families in distress.
One of the residents told KNB that every day life has been a disaster due to lack of water supply in the area.
He said, “We have not been able to do anything since past 7 days. To cook our meals, we have to buy packed water from the market now cause not even a single drop is flowing though the water pipelines.”
“Water crisis has led to poor sanitation and hygiene, due to which people are very much prone to getting sick here,” he added.
Kashmir News Bureau spoke to the President of Welfare Committee of the locality, Mohd. Aslam Lone, who said that despite repeated requests to concerned officials the issue has not been resolved.
“Amid the Covid-19 Pandemic one thing has always been stressed up by the government and that is washing hands properly but the condition of our households is such that we don’t even have water to drink, let alone maintaining hygiene to fight off Covid-19,” he said.
Lone said, “Repeatedly, we have made requests to the concerned JEE and even left a message to the Chief Engineer PHE but unfortunately no concrete action has been taken yet to put an end to the week long water crisis.”
He said that the people of the area have been patiently waiting for the issue to get resolved and had all faith in the PHE department to figure out something, but a week has passed by and the households are now in absolute despair.
Lone said, “The situation is dire here; especially the health of elderly and children is at stake here. People can’t bear it anymore and deserve to have access to clean water. Is not that our right?”
As per the President of the Welfare Committee, there are 28 houses in the locality out of which 20 houses have no access to water supply at all since past 7 days.
Kashmir News Bureau made several attempts to contact Chief Engineer PHE Kashmir as well as concerned JEE to take their comments on the issue but received no response. (KNB)
