Srinagar, 22 September (KNB):The Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Kashmir Molvi Mohammad Umar Farooq, addressing a congregation at Jamia Masjid today, marked a poignant moment in his life as he returned to the public eye after enduring four years and nearly two months of house detention.
He revealed that since August 4, 2019, he had been confined to his home, stripped of his rights and liberties, and denied the opportunity to meet with the people he serves. Despite numerous appeals for his release, it was only after pursuing legal avenues that he received word of his release from house detention.
This return to Jamia Masjid, he remarked, was a deeply emotional moment, one that he attributed to the will of Almighty Allah and the prayers and love of the people.
Throughout his address, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq acknowledged the strength of the people who stood by him during these trying times. He described them as his constant source of strength, residing in his heart, thoughts, and prayers. These individuals, he noted, represent a resilient and compassionate community.
He did not shy away from addressing the tumultuous events since August 2019, including the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A, the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir into a union territory, and the separation of Ladakh. These unilateral decisions, he lamented, have disempowered the region.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, as a representative of the Mirwaiz institution, emphasized a commitment to outreach, dialogue, and reason. He highlighted the historical role of the Mirwaiz in propagating dialogue and accord, even when it meant personal sacrifices.
The speech also touched upon the challenges faced by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) in voicing its concerns, as restrictions on statements in local media limited their ability to communicate. In these times of restricted expression, he called for patience, responsibility, and unwavering faith in God.
Addressing the long-standing issue of the divided Jammu and Kashmir, he emphasized the need for resolution, acknowledging that it’s a human problem rather than a territorial dispute. He referenced international consensus on this matter and the desire of families and friends separated by borders to reunite.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful means of resolution, advocating for dialogue and reconciliation. He noted that this path has led to personal suffering but reiterated their status as realist resolution seekers, not separatists or peace disruptors.
The Mirwaiz also expressed concern about the incarceration of leaders, journalists, human rights activists, and lawyers, urging their prompt release for the well-being of their health and families.
In conclusion, he addressed the youth, advising them to have faith, patience, and a strong connection with their faith as a key to survival and success. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq extended his gratitude to various segments of society, including politicians, Ulemas, traders, and civil society members, who had supported his release on multiple occasions.(KNB)
