Srinagar 6 September (KNB): Peoples Democratic Party Chief Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said last rites are the rights of the family members and should be respected but nothing like that was allowed in Srinagar after the demise of Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
“Here, otherwise was done. I heard that family members of (SAS) Geelani were beaten up, even the women faced inappropriate behaviour and apart from that, legal action has been taken against them,” Mehbooba Mufti said, while talking to reporters in Srinagar.
Such actions are against the very culture of India, She said, adding that the country is regarded highly when it comes to the brotherhood, law and democratic values.
Everyone here has the right speak in a democracy but not agreeing over something does not mean that even after the person’s death, you’ll take revenge because of his ideology, said Mehbooba and added, “and that’s exactly what happened here.”
“You cannot make a leader like or dislike something by the dint of guns,” she said, adding that all these days, voluntarily people of Kashmir observed a state of mourning and kept their shops/work closed.
“This was a natural reaction of the people. Even those who did not agree with Geelani’s ideology, now after coming across the reports of all that happened at his residence, are sympathising with him,” Mehbooba said. (KNB)
