Leech therapy makes a comeback in Kashmir

Srinagar, March 23(KNB): Leeches, widely used by medical professionals to promote bloodletting, are making a comeback in Jammu and Kashmir to heal a number of diseases, as leach therapy help to improve blood flow to body parts where it has slowed or stopped, attracting patients from all over Kashmir.

21st March Nowruz, the beginning of the year in the Persian calendar has a different significance in Kashmir, On this day thousands of patients suffering from various skin ailments gather at Hazratbal, the outskirts of Srinagar to receive the leech treatment.

It is believed that leech therapy is better than many pharmacological treatments because of its curing effects as leeches suck out impure blood from the body and thus helps to cure many diseases like arthritis, diabetes, baldness, blood pressure disorders and many other skin diseases.

While talking to Kashmir News Bureau, Parveena one of the patient suffering from skin disorder said ” I
was suffering from acute skin disorder and only after I went for leech therapy the infection was cured within few weeks.”

Another local Ghulam Hasan said, “Leeches are effective at increasing blood circulation, the people have been using leeches from many years to cure everything from headaches to gangrene. It is a legitimate treatment that can help heal skin grafts and restore blood circulation and breaking up blood clots.”(KNB)
