Srinagar, Mar 07 (KNB): A complete shutdown was observed in the length and breadth of Kashmir valley on Wednesday against the killing of civilians in Shopian and against the shifting of Kashmiri political prisoners from Srinagar to outside Valley. The call of shutdown was given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) besides appealing people to march towards Shopian, south Kashmir. The authorities to curb people from reaching Shopian and to maintain law and order placed strict restrictions in many parts of the Valley including downtown Srinagar.
Sources told Kashmir News Bureau that JRL leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq defied the house confinement and tried to march towards Shopian, however, a contingent of police stopped them to move and kept in preventive custody.
Several leaders including Muhammad Yasin Malik, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War, Hakeem Abdul Rashid, Zaffer Akbar Bhat, Javaid Ahmad Mir, Umar Adil Dar and other were placed either house arrest or detained in different police stations.
Earlier at 11.00am on Wednesday Police issued an advisory seeking cooperation of the people for maintaining order for ensuring peace.
“At some places you are going to find restrictions today in Srinagar city. Also South Kashmir particularly in Shopian restriction has been placed. General Public is requested not to pay attention to any rumours. In case of emergency please reach to Dial 100 for assistance,” a spokesman said in a mail issued to media.
Earlier all exams had been also postponed till further orders. Train services between Baramulla and Banihal towns were suspended by the authorities.
Reports reaching KNB, that the students of Kashmir University (KU) on Wednesday staged strong protest demonstrations against the civilian killings.
The JRL leaders expressed serious concern over the plight of dozens of resistance leaders and Kashmiri prisoners booked by NIA under ‘fictitious’ charges stating that it is condemnable that these prisoners are deprived from basic facilities including medical aid.
The Hurriyat (M) spokesman strongly condemned the imposition of curbs in many parts of Srinagar and Shopian district not allowing leadership and people to go to shopian and also the sealing of APHC Headquarters in RajBagh and Awami Action Committee headquarters at Mirwaiz Manzil Rajouri Kadal Srinagar.
Pertinently, following the dramatic escape of LeT’s Mohammed Naveed Jhatt from a hospital, as many as 40 prisoners were shifted from the central jail Srinagar to prisons outside the Valley, a step taken after.
On Sunday six persons in Shopian area of south Kashmir which include two militants and four youth were killed in forces action. (KNB)
