Srinagar, Feb 17 (KNB): A shutdown was observed across Kashmir on Saturday against the killing of a Shia cleric and Hurriyat (G) leader Muhammad Yousuf Nadeem at the hands of unknown Gunmen. Restrictions were imposed by the authorities in downtown area of capital city Srinagar in wake of the shutdown call given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL).
Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani accused Indian agencies behind the killing of Nadeem.
Contingents of paramilitary forces have been deployed at all entry and exit points of downtown Srinagar, while lanes and by lanes have been blocked by concertina wires to prevent people from taking out any protests. All shops and other commercial establishments are closed in commercial hub Lal Chowk in Srinagar while public transport is mostly off the roads.
Joint Resistance Leadership JRL comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, had called for shutdown against shifting of local detainees to outside jails, “murder” of a Hurriyat activist by unidentified gunmen and deteriorating rights situation in Kashmir.
However in some areas of uptown the shutdown did not evoke much strong response.
Meanwhile expressing serious concern over the frequent imposition of curfew and restrictions in downtown Srinagar and caging entire population of the area without any proper justification the Hurriyat (M) spokesman said the move amounts to violation of basic democratic principles. (KNB)
