Srinagar, Feb 11(KNB): A Compelete shutdown is being observed in the Kashmir valley on Monday to mark 35th death anniversary of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Mohammad Maqbool Bhat, who was hanged and burried within the premises of Delhi’s Tihar jail on this day in 1984.
Scores of people staged a candlelight protest on Sunday evening in Trehgam to commemorate Bhat’s death anniversary.
All Shops, business establishments and private offices remained closed while public transport was off the roads.However, thin movement of private traffic was witnessed on the city roads.
The call for shutdown was issued by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), comprising of Hurriyat Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik, and reiterated their demand to hand over Bhat’s remains to his family.
Authorities made heavy deployments of police and paramilitary forces at law and order sensitive places in most parts of the valley.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF Chief Yaseen Malik were detained by Police on Friday afternoon, while Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest.(KNB)
