Kashmir: Food processing craving attention

Srinagar, Jun 28 (KNB): It is known fact that food processing is the transformation of raw ingredients into food, or of food into other forms. On the other hand, Food processing  takes clean, harvested crops or butchered animal products and uses these to produce attractive, marketable and often long shelf-life food products.
Abid Ahmad, an entrepreneur stated: “We in Kashmir should try to developing infra for Food Processing Industry so that we generate meaningful opportunities of employment for youth. It is growing at the impressive rate of 20-25% per year at global level & we are hopeful that Kashmir would definitely benefit from this tangible growth.
Rough data has stated installed capacity of fruit & vegetable processing industry in Kashmir has increased to good extent. The processed items are fruit pulps, juices, jams, apple concentrate, canned fruits etc.”
Experts also stare that there is a vibrant potential in the food processing Industry, where in the industry faces a wastage of around 7metric tons of fresh fruits due to non-availability of cold storages & insufficient industries in this sector.
Ground facts show Kashmir has the capacity to produce larger quantities of vegetables by utilizing the wastelands for cultivation of vegetables and thus it is stressed to improve upon the food processing infra in the state. (KNB)
