Baramulla 02 Sep(KNB): In a significant development, the Baramulla Police have apprehended a woman who was impersonating a police officer and preying on unsuspecting victims.
In a statement issued to KNB, Police said that the arrest came after a complaint was filed by a local resident, Wasif Hassan, on September 1, 2023.
Hassan, a resident of Kunzer, reported that during a bus journey, he encountered a woman who introduced herself as Ashia, claiming to be a Sub-Inspector currently stationed at the Kunzar Police Station. She assured Hassan that she possessed the authority to secure him a position as a Constable in the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Lured by the promise of a job opportunity, Hassan handed over a substantial sum of ₹10,000 to the impersonating police officer. However, Ashia contacted him again on the same day, soliciting additional funds to expedite the delivery of his appointment order, promising completion within 2 to 3 days.
Suspecting deception, Hassan promptly reported the matter to the Kunzer Police Station, leading to a thorough investigation. The police team successfully apprehended the accused person, who was using the alias Ashia. Her real identity has been revealed as Bisma Yousuf Sheikh, the daughter of Mohd Yousuf Sheikh, and a resident of Tappie Khag.
During her apprehension, the investigating team recovered not only Ms. Sheikh but also a police uniform and the ₹10,000 fraudulently obtained from Hassan, Police said.
Community members are urged to exercise caution and not fall prey to such fraudulent schemes. Authorities have emphasized the importance of promptly reporting suspicious activities to the police. The Baramulla Police are committed to taking decisive action against anti-social elements to ensure the safety and security of the community, statement added.(KNB)
