Forest Loss Along Shimla Ridge Triggers Alarm Over Water Catchment

“Unchecked forest loss along Shimla’s vital catchment ridge could severely impact water security and ecological balance,” says Retd Senior Army officer Atul Kaushik

Shimla, Apr 11(KNB): Significant forest degradation along the Chail–Koti–Kufri ridge, a key water catchment zone for Shimla, has raised fresh environmental concerns, with satellite imagery and ground observations pointing to rapid ecological decline over the past two decades.

Analysis of satellite data from 2005 to 2024 indicates that dense forest cover along the ridge and adjoining slopes has witnessed visible fragmentation, with large patches giving way to construction activity and exposed soil surfaces. The ridge forms a critical recharge zone sustaining Shimla’s water supply, making the reported changes particularly concerning.

The findings highlight multiple instances of ridge-top construction, slope cutting linked to greenhouse activity, and widespread tree clearance. Several locations along the ridge show clear signs of soil erosion and landscape disturbance, suggesting sustained human intervention in ecologically sensitive areas.

A comparative assessment of imagery from 2013 to 2024 points to a transition from stable, continuous forest canopy to increasingly fragmented terrain. Experts warn that such disruptions not only weaken slope stability but also impair natural drainage and groundwater recharge systems.

Ground-level observations corroborate the satellite evidence, indicating expansion of construction along ridge tops, shrinking tree cover down the slopes, and aggressive cutting of hill slopes. These activities, if left unchecked, could heighten the risk of landslides and water scarcity in the region.

Environmental observers have termed the trend as alarming, noting that the ridge acts as a lifeline for Shimla’s water security. They have called for immediate regulatory intervention to curb unplanned construction and protect the fragile ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Retd. Major General Atul Kaushik has also raised the issue publicly, drawing attention to the environmental degradation along the ridge. In a social media post, he flagged concerns over forest loss and its potential impact on Shimla’s water catchment, urging authorities to take immediate corrective measures.

The development has triggered calls for authorities to take urgent cognisance of the issue and enforce safeguards to prevent further degradation of the catchment area.(KNB)
