ELFA International observes International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2022

Srinagar 13 October (KNB): In the wake of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and as a part of its “Whole School Safety Program”, ELFA International in collaboration with Directorate of Samagra Shiksha organised two grand awareness cum sensitisation workshops for the students and faculty of MPML Higher Secondary, Bag I Dilawar Khan, Srinagar and Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, respectively.

The event kick-started with the members from ELFA International introducing students and faculty members to ELFA International, its ideas and aspirations, previous accomplishments and future endeavours. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Mehran introduced students to the contours of the Whole School Safety Program (WSSP), explicating its scope, importance and Urgency.

He also traced the trajectory of WSSP – its conception and inception in 2020 and its further evolution in 21 and 22. He introduced comprehensive to the components of WSSP including MHM, DRR, WASH, MHPSS, EVAC, GBV and other allied and auxiliary domainsSyed Azhar, Regional Coordinator at ELFA International, gave a thorough and comprehensive presentation on Disasters, their classification, mitigation and loss minimisation ensuing therefrom. He sensitised the participants to the practice of disaster preparedness and emphasised the exigency of proactive structural and administrative measures. Speaking on the loss of life and property rising in the wake of any disaster, he delineated the necessity and pressing urgency to take these disasters seriously to minimize the calamatic and traumatic effects in post disaster phase Mr. Danish Aziz, education specialist at UNICEF appreciated the role ELFA International has been playing in enacting and implementing the WSSP across the UT of J&K. He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the authorities, particularly in the education sector, who made WSSP a grand success and a master definer for all future endeavours in this direction. Mr. Ajeet Sharma, State Coordinator Samagra Shiksha presided over the event at Jammu. He stressed the need for such awareness and orientation programs and congratulated ELFA International for the same. He interacted with the students and teachers in detail and talked about the importance of mock-drills etc. Mir Sajad, Regional Coordinator ELFA International, presented a holistic overview of the scenario of Disaster Management in the UT and highlighted some systemic and individual efforts to mitigate the same. The events, both in Jammu and Kashmir were interspersed with activities, mock drills and impromptu question answers.(KNB)
