Srinagar 06 July (KNB): Delimitation Commission is set to land in J&K UT today following its recent announcement to visit here from 6th to 9th July. The commission will be meeting regional political parties, election officers of districts besides other stakeholders.
Under Article 28 of the constitution, the parliament enacts delimitation after every census to redraw constituencies so that the population of all constituencies would be made close to equal.
Similarly, following the dividing of erstwhile state of J&K into two UTs, the Delimitation Commission would meet today with all stakeholders, political parties and district election officers in order to redraw constituencies in J&K.
The commission is on a four day visit to J&K and it usually comprises retired SC Judge, Chief Election Commissioner and respective state election commissioner. However, in today’s visit of Delimitation Commission the same would be reflected as its composition includes — ex SC Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and J&K election commissioner K K Sharma.
Earlier, officials in its statement had said that the Delimitation Commission was constituted in March 2020 and its term was extended by another year in March 2021 in view of the on-going pandemic.
It further said that the Commission also has five Associate Members nominated by the Speaker, Lok Sabha. The Commission already had a series of meetings related to data/ map of the Districts/ Constituencies related to census 2011.
“Officials said that the Commission expects that all stakeholders will cooperate in this endeavour and will provide valuable suggestions so that the task of delimitation is completed timely,” it added. (KNB)
