Crime Branch to investigate Kathua minor girl case

Jammu, Jan 23 (KNB): Following the public uproar across Jammu and Kashmir over the rape and murder of a minor girl of Kathua, the government handed over the case to Crime Branch.

Pertinently, the Crime branch of J&K Police was initially a part of CID Organization of J&K Police. It was separated in the year 1978 to function independently. Two Police Stations viz. Police Station Crime Branch Srinagar and Crime Branch Jammu were created to deal with the specified crimes.

Minister for Revenue and parliamentary Affairs, Abdul Rehman Veeri today informed the house that the government has handed over the case of murder of a minor girl Ashifa in Hiranagar to Crime Branch J&K Police.

He said the government has accorded sanction to the transfer of the case FIR No: 10/2018 Under Section 363, 302 RPC of Police Station Hiranagar, district Kathua to Crime branch for further investigation.

Arifa Bano, a girl from Gujjar-Bakerwal community, was abducted on January 10 when she had gone to search for a mule owned by her family. Her body was recovered on the outskirts of her native village on January 17.

Her death has triggered widespread protests demanding justice for her.

Earlier, the Government said that the accused, a minor (15 years old), has been arrested in connection with the death of a minor girl in Hiranagar area of district Kathua. The house was informed that government has ordered the suspension of SHO concerned till further inquiry.

“No one will be spared and action will be initiated against those responsible for the murder”, Veeri had said.
Meanwhile, the police on Tuesday released social activist Advocate Talib Husain, arrested on Sunday evening at Kathua highway. (KNB)
