At least 10 person killed in snow savegary as heavy snow bound valley

 

Srinagar, Feb 09(KNB):More than ten people including police personnel died in snow avalanches in two days of heavy snowfall across Jammu and Kashmir including seven in a massive one that buried a police post near Jawahar Tunnel in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Search and rescue teams recovered seven bodies of police personnel buried under mounds of snow on Friday while one more body of policeman was recovered on Saturday from the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

About 20 people were inside the police post when it was hit by the avalanche on Thursday evening.

Earlier, heavy snowfall hit the valley on 6th Feb leading to frequent road closures, strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway remained shut for fourth consecutive day while flights to Srinagar airport resumed on Friday afternoon following a two-day suspension.

Heaviest snowfall led to a massive shortage of essential supplies in Kashmir, even the government has now ordered rationing of fuel. Petrol pumps have been asked not to give more than three litres of petrol.

The avalanche hit a police post near the Jawahar Tunnel on Thursday in which ten people comprised eight police personnel and two prisoners were burried.The rescue teams saved two police personnel on Friday, while eight bodies were also recovered.

Besides the Jawahar Tunnel victims, two more people were killed in landslides in the Ramsoo-Ramban sector of the highway.

A couple and a man were buried alive on Friday in two separate avalanches in Anantnag district.

Earlier, on Saturday morning, a seven-year old, Irfan Ahmed died after being hit by a snowslide in Chrihar village of Sopore town that slipped from a rooftop of house.(KNB)
