Srinagar, 02 March (KNB): Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid, a prominent religious organization, on Friday expressed deep concern over the alleged ongoing detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, preventing him from carrying out his religious duties at the Jama Masjid.
In a statement issued to news agency Kashmir News Bureau-KNB stated that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has once again been barred by the authorities from offering mandatory Friday prayers and delivering sermons at the Jama Masjid, actions he has been consistently prohibited from. Despite assurances from the authorities just a day prior, they reneged on their promise, placing him under house detention once again.
The Anjuman emphasized the unjust nature of preventing Mirwaiz from practicing his religious duties at a place of significant spiritual importance to Muslims. Not only does this restriction violate his fundamental rights, but it also infringes upon the rights of the community members who benefit from his teachings.
Statement further stated that repeated appeals to the authorities for Mirwaiz’s release have reportedly been ignored, prompting the Anjuman to place their hopes in the judicial system. The matter is scheduled for a hearing in court on March 6th, and the Anjuman urges the court to recognize the gravity of the situation and ensure the restoration of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s religious and civil rights.
Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid calls upon the courts to intervene and allow Mirwaiz to visit the mosque on Fridays, thereby ceasing the government’s interference in religious practices. They assert that the freedom to practice religion without hindrance is a fundamental right and appeal to the courts for its restoration to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. added the statement- KNB
