JAMMU, February 07(KNB):
Under the visionary leadership of Prof. (Dr.) D. N. Sharma, Executive Director & CEO, and Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana, Dean (Research) and Head, Department of Radiation Oncology, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, observed World Cancer Day 2026 through a series of meaningful, patient-centric initiatives. Embracing this year’s global theme, “United by Unique,” the observance emphasized that while every cancer journey is deeply personal, the strength of collective support remains universal.

The programme was organized with the active involvement of the Department of Surgical Oncology, led by Dr. Paras Khanna, along with Dr. Girija Priya Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, reflecting a strong, unified institutional commitment to comprehensive oncology care.

A special “Human Experience” session formed the emotional core of the observance, providing a platform for patients and caregivers to share their personal journeys. Patients spoke about their individual battles with cancer, highlighting that although treatment protocols may be standardized, the emotional and psychological paths to healing are uniquely personal. Caregivers candidly shared the physical and mental challenges of supporting loved ones, reinforcing the belief that no one walks alone in the cancer journey. The session witnessed an overwhelming response from families, many of whom expressed heartfelt gratitude for the compassionate care provided by the nursing staff, residents, and faculty of AIIMS Jammu.

As part of the pre-event activities, a Poster Competition was organized on February 3, encouraging students and staff to creatively advocate for cancer awareness, prevention, and unity. Participants showcased powerful artistic expressions conveying vital public health messages, and prizes were awarded to the winners. Additionally, healthcare professionals conducted focused awareness sessions emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment approaches, and the need to address patients’ emotional well-being alongside medical care.

The observance concluded with symbolic gestures of empathy and hope. Care baskets were distributed to patients and caregivers as a mark of solidarity, followed by a ceremonial cake-cutting and balloon release, symbolizing resilience and hope. Through these initiatives, AIIMS Jammu reaffirmed its dedication to community awareness and high-quality, patient-centered care, standing firmly by its commitment that in the fight against cancer, all remain truly “United by Unique.”(KNB)
