Srinagar 31 August(KNB): Jammu and Kashmir Taekwondo Association successfully hosted the Senior State Championship on August 31, 2023, in Jammu. The event served as both a Senior State Championship and trials for the upcoming senior national competition. Participants are vying for a spot in the top 8 teams, which would secure their qualification for the prestigious national games, a hallmark event in our nation’s sporting calendar.
Afreen Hyder, a dedicated athlete associated with the Punit Balan group, has emerged triumphant by securing the first position in the state championship. Her remarkable achievement propels her towards her ultimate goal – qualifying for the national games. Afreen, previously ranked number 1 in All India and within the top 100 globally, is determined to earn a Gold in the forthcoming senior national championship scheduled to be held in Assam during the second week of September.
Afreen’s journey began at the tender age of 7, and her unwavering dedication to Taekwondo has been evident ever since. Her commitment bore fruit in 2017, when she became the first official junior medalist in the history of Jammu & Kashmir Taekwondo. Her prowess extends beyond the state, with medals garnered from various national and international competitions.
Last year, Afreen secured a bronze medal in a grade 2 ranking event held in Israel. Earlier this year, she demonstrated her prowess in the senior national championship held in Nashik, Maharashtra. Afreen attributes her success to the unwavering support of the Punit Balan group, which has been instrumental in her journey, as well as her coach, Atul Pangotra, whose guidance has been a cornerstone of her Taekwondo career.(KNB)
