I receive this honour from the International Law Centre with profound gratitude and humility. I accept it not as a personal distinction, but as a tribute to the legal fraternity—the quiet, steadfast force whose dedication keeps the pillars of our constitutional democracy standing. For more than four and a half decades, I have served this profession as a lifelong student: with diligence, with integrity and with an unwavering faith in constitutionalism.
To the young lawyers gathered here, I say this: law is more than a profession; it is a solemn trust placed in your hands. It binds you to society, to the Constitution and to the cause of justice. A strong judicial system is the bedrock of democracy, and an independent judiciary is the shield that protects every citizen’s rights and liberties.
To the young members of the Bar: pursue excellence, but never purchase it at the cost of integrity. Deepen your knowledge with humility; let courage be guided by compassion. Read the Constitution not as a relic of the past, but as a living promise renewed in every generation. Defend the independence of the judiciary, uphold the highest standards of professional ethics and never allow ambition to eclipse your duty to justice.
The Supreme Court of India stands at the heart of our constitutional order. It is entrusted with preserving equality, pluralism, diversity and the rule of law—values that give our Republic both its character and its conscience. As guardian of the Constitution and fundamental rights, it must ensure that constitutional values rise above power, prejudice and arbitrariness. In a nation woven from countless languages, faiths, cultures and histories, the judiciary must remain a vigilant guardian of equal citizenship, individual dignity, liberty, social harmony and justice for all.
The future of our judicial system rests as much upon the integrity, scholarship and courage of lawyers as upon the wisdom of judges. A fearless judiciary cannot endure without a fearless and responsible Bar. Let your advocacy become a bridge for those whose voices are unheard, a safeguard for those whose rights are threatened and a source of strength for public faith in justice. Serve the law with conviction, defend liberty without hesitation and help ensure that justice remains not a distant ideal, but a living right belonging to every citizen.
