Sopore, July 25 (KNB): Tarzoo Weir Park in Tehsil Khoie, once a popular recreational spot for families and tourists, has fallen into a state of neglect, with locals urging the authorities to undertake immediate restoration and maintenance to revive the public park.
Speaking to Kashmir News Bureau (KNB), Chairman of the Tarzoo Development Forum, Aijaz Ahmad Dar, said years of inadequate maintenance have left the park in a dilapidated condition. He alleged that benches, street lights, flower pots, tourist huts and several other public facilities have either been damaged or become non-functional due to the absence of proper staff and upkeep.
Dar said the park was originally developed under the Manasbal Development Authority (MDA) but was later transferred to the Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA). He maintained that GDA is primarily occupied with managing major tourist destinations, making it difficult to adequately maintain smaller parks like Tarzoo Weir Park.
“We demand that the park be brought back under the Manasbal Development Authority to ensure its proper maintenance, smooth functioning and overall development,” he said.
Another local resident, Shoaib Farooq, told KNB that the park was once a favourite picnic destination but has now lost its charm due to neglect.
“If timely restoration is carried out, this place has the potential to emerge as a major tourist attraction in the area. Even a nominal entry fee of ₹10 to ₹20 could generate funds for regular maintenance and help preserve its natural beauty,” he said.(KNB)
When contacted by Kashmir News Bureau (KNB) via WhatsApp, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gulmarg Development Authority said, “We have asked for the R&B estimation, will arrange funds and take necessary action.”
Residents have appealed to the concerned authorities to expedite the restoration process and revive Tarzoo Weir Park so that it can once again become a vibrant recreational destination and a valuable public asset for the region. (KNB)
